The differences between traditional calls and VoIP calls

Many companies make calls using VoIP (Voice over IP) technology. But do you really know what this technology consists of and what are its advantages over conventional telephone calls?

VoIP vs. conventional telephony The new technologies sector and especially the telephony industry is constantly evolving. Companies can now make calls over analogue, digital and IP voice technology. But the terminology used by telephone companies is sometimes so technical that we do not always know how VoIP differs from traditional telephony, and which is more suitable for our company. We will now discuss how IP telephony works and why it is interesting to know about it.

What is VoIP? VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol is a group of resources that allow the voice signal to travel over the Internet using an IP protocol.

Basically, it is a voice channel that allows you to make and receive calls to any type of device that can be connected to the network such as a computer, tablet, smartphone or IP phone. In this type of telephony the number of channels is as large as the bandwidth allows and is offered by our VoIP telephony provider.

How does IP telephony work?

When we make a call over an IP voice phone, our voice is digitised, compressed and sent in IP data packets. In other words, the analogue signal is converted to digital format and the signal is compressed to Internet Protocol (IP) and these data packets are sent over the Internet to the receiver. Once they have reached their destination, they are decompressed and the original voice signal is recovered.

Depending on the device with which we make the calls, we distinguish between three types of IP telephony communication:

- Computer to Computer.

- From Computer to Telephone.

- Telephone to Telephone.

Differences between VoIP and conventional telephony

1) IP telephony relies on a network structure. Therefore there are no limitations on the number of conversations that can be held at the same time.

2) A highlight for the business environment is that, by not relying on physical lines, an interconnected network of stores/branches of the same company can be created under one main number.

3) In an IP phone call the data packets with the digitised voice signal are sent over the internet to the recipient and each packet can use one path to reach its destination. In contrast, in a conventional telephone call, the PBX establishes a permanent connection between the two parties.

4) VOIP providers generally deliver features that conventional telephone operators charge separate fees for, so it is usually cheaper. Businesses can take advantage of IP technology to implement a virtual switchboard that streamlines all their processes, with the latest technological developments, and avoiding the costs of installing a physical switchboard.
