Analysis commissioned by FirstCare as part of a wider report by the Centre for Economic and Business Research forecasts an increase to £21 billion by 2020 and £26 billion by 2030.
These levels of absenteeism are said to be contributed to by the increase in mental health problems affecting mainly people in their 30s and 40s, which apparently increase even more due to the Christmas and summer holidays.

The Government recommends that managers should be better trained to effectively implement sickness absence policies and have a greater understanding of increasing employee attendance.
